Nicole Roskos

Studio #12

A painter of landscapes, portraits, and figures, Nicole Roskos studied under Hong Nian Zhang, Lois Wooley, and Nancy Campbell at the Woodstock School of Art in New York, and at Drew University, where she studied Ecology and Religion.

A doctor of philosophy, a published writer, and an environmental activist, her passion for wilderness preservation and her affinity with plants, trees, and animals informs her landscape paintings. Ecofeminist Theologian Catherine Keller wrote, “Roskos’ work portrays the complex interplay of light and shadow that illuminates the often sublime presence of Nature.”

Roskos’ most recent work stems out of her study of Zen Buddhism and reckoning with our climate crisis.  Figured in three of her most recent works, Zen Master Thich Nhat Hahn’s teachings have given Roskos a new mission to make paintings that articulate a peaceful call to engaged action through understanding, compassion, and lovingkindness.  The current body of work communicates interbeing and the miracle of life as inspiration towards mindful action.
