Janell O’Rourke
Studio #35
“I work through a visual language of drawing, stop-motion videos, sculptural objects, contemporary silhouettes, painting and photography. My studio practice is deeply shaped through drawing, often using intentionally low-tech materials and techniques. I believe in the inherent flexibility of art; it clears a space for deep engagement and imagination. The process of making is always a kind of becoming, transitions that are ephemeral. Through art making I often explore ways that question and de-center the position and focus of my species. I am interested in creating experimental work that collages together different visual thoughts with materials and ideas that take into account the agency and creativity of other life forms
Janell is a founding member of the artist coalition ArtAnimalAffect with Kathryn Eddy and L.A. Watson. As eco-feminist artists, ArtAnimalAffect’s mission is to make work that challenges hierarchical, human-centered attitudes about other animals and the earth.”
