Kathy Halper
Studio #34
“As a recent transplant from Chicago to the Hudson Valley. I am newly inspired by creeks, fallen trees, visiting wildlife and my beautiful new studio. The desire to explore both personal and global themes of change and adaptation is a focus of my new work. My prior body of narrative paintings and sculptures, conceived during Covid, became real-time diaries of isolation, routine and my deep love of home. I celebrated the rut of 30 years of marriage, dogs in my personal space, and staring at screens. My humor deflected from the anxiety lurking below these domestic scenes. I paint in oils and like to play with imperfect lines and warped perspectives and often employ craft materials for 3D effect. I created a wall installation from cardboard and paper mache for my solo show at Evanston Art Center in 2024, which is now on display in my studio, so come by!
A little more about me; I was born (1958) and raised in Chicago. I studied advertising at the University of Colorado in Boulder and was a copywriter in Chicago for ten years. As a new mother I started painting and never looked back. I have been a professional artist for 30 years and have exhibited with George Billis LA, Muriel Guepin Gallery in New York, Jonathan Ferrara Gallery in New Orleans, and Packer Schopf Gallery in Chicago, as well as many other venues. I was selected by Lucy Lippard for “From the Center: Now!” and Kendall College of Art & Design as part of ArtPrize. My work has been shown at Context/Miami Art Week, SOFA Chicago and my embroidery art has been featured in HuffPost, Art Voices and Surface Design Journal. I am very excited to now be a part of the Hudson Valley creative community.”
