Rebecca LS Buchanan
Studio #17
I am a painter. Paintings are my words, speaking with images and color where I subtract, add, scrape away, simplifying forms and purposefully not finishing every detail.
My work of painting or love of painting has been put on hold from a dumb injury in January, and new works will be about household items abstracted, based on what my husband and I are dealing with fixing in a new, old house with perhaps the inspectors report in the background.
Previous paintings had to do with my subway travels to and from work from Brooklyn to Manhattan. I sometimes took 2 or more trains, getting off in the middle of my travel (train delays, bodies on the subway, etc). The works are the positive and negative stories, meeting heroes on the train that others ignore or pass by.
Older works have to do with moving to Brooklyn during a Covid Pandemic and staying to explore being a grandparent, looking at my roots (My mom’s mom graduated from Bronx high school) and beyond. The views were from my windows and my walks in the neighborhood.
The titles of my paintings are things I hear on the subway, snippets of conversation or wherever I travel.
