Istar Schwager

Istar Schwager has been creating art for as long as she can remember. Her recent work is mostly collage, often colorful and playfully representational.

Istar creates vibrant artwork out of materials that might otherwise be overlooked or discarded. For instance, she transforms recycled paper, stamps, envelopes, and cards into new images in her collages.   Her hope is to encourage people to see exciting possibilities in the ordinary, and to celebrate the richness of the visual world.

Istar studied studio art with excellent teachers including Jacob Lawrence, Ralph Humphrey, and Pia Alexander. She studied art history with another set of excellent teachers, including  Meyer Schapiro, Julius Held, and Barbara Novack.

Artwork by Istar has been exhibited widely and is in many private collections.  She is a member of the National Association of Women Artists and is an active member of the Woodstock Artists Association and Museum, where her work has appeared in numerous shows. She is returning to the Saugerties Artists Studio Tour after a hiatus.
